York in Albany

York heating and cooling in Albany.

Albany shares the same cool marine layer as the rest of the inner bay, so central air conditioning is close to nonexistent here and heating is the system that actually gets used. The compact 1920s and 1940s bungalows along the Marin Avenue grid were built with wall furnaces, and plenty of those original York units are still doing the job decades later. On Albany Hill above, and around the UC Village family housing off Buchanan Street, the mix runs a bit newer but the same wall-furnace pattern holds.

Working in a 1.8 square mile city means tight lots and short driveways, so a wall furnace call is often about reaching a unit boxed into a hallway or a closet, not about the size of the job. ADUs and basement units add their own small heaters to service too. Mini-splits are going in during remodels for owners who want even heat, or a bit of cooling on the rare hot week, without tearing into old plaster for ducts.

This is handled through Bay Area HVAC Service, our HVAC division. Our techs carry EPA 608 Universal certification, we work under CSLB license #1136642, we take calls seven days, and every job gets a written quote before we start. If you go ahead with the repair, the $99 diagnostic is waived.

Common repairs we do

What we close on the truck.

  • Flame sensor drops the burner. Albany's wall furnaces run short bursts on cool mornings and sit the rest of the day, and that stop-start pattern oxidizes the York flame sensor until it lights and then cuts out. I clean or replace the sensor and check flame current before I leave.
  • Ignitor cracked in an old wall furnace. The bungalow wall furnaces along the Marin Avenue grid are old enough now that the hot surface ignitor turns brittle and cracks. Once it does, the unit won't light at all. I stock the common ignitors on the van, so this is usually a single visit.
  • Control board after a long idle. A mild year leaves the York board sitting unused, and the first real cold snap can catch it failing to fire the blower or ignition. I test the board and its connectors first, since a loose connection shows up more often than a bad board.

FAQ

York in Albany questions, answered.

  • How long is the drive from San Ramon to Albany?
We route Albany with Berkeley and Richmond on our Inner East Bay days. From San Ramon that's 40 to 45 minutes on 580 or Highway 24 to 80. Once a window is booked, we send a written arrival time.
  • My bungalow has one wall furnace and no ducts. Do you work on that?
Yes. Wall furnaces are the norm in Albany's older bungalows and we service York units directly. If you want cooling for the occasional hot week or more even heat, we can talk through a mini-split retrofit during a remodel.
  • Do you charge just to diagnose the furnace?
The diagnostic is $99, and it's waived when you approve the repair. We give you a written quote before starting any work.
