Williams in Newark

Williams heating and cooling in Newark.

Newark grew fast in the 1950s and 60s with affordable tract homes, and many of the smaller original houses near Lakeshore and the older blocks were heated by a single Williams wall furnace. We service these units and keep them safe and working for families who never converted to central heat.

Newark sits right at the bay edge near the Dumbarton flats, so the air is damp and the marine layer rolls in. That moisture rusts the older Williams burners and pilot assemblies, and I see corrosion-driven failures here more than ignition wear. I always check the burner and exchanger condition closely on Newark units.

With ADU additions going in around Newark, a wall furnace is often the simplest heat for a converted garage or new back unit with no duct space. We install the right Williams model and verify the gas line and venting are correct for the conversion.

Common repairs we do

What we close on the truck.

  • Corroded pilot and burner from bay damp. Newark's marine moisture rusts the pilot tubing and burner ports on older Williams wall units, which gives you a weak or yellow pilot and rough ignition. I clean or replace the corroded pilot assembly, clear the burner ports, and confirm a clean blue flame before I leave.
  • Thermocouple failure. Corrosion at the thermocouple tip and connection drops the millivolt signal, so the pilot lights but the gas valve will not hold open. I test the output and replace the thermocouple with the correct length, then verify the valve stays open on a full heat cycle.
  • Heat exchanger rust-through. On older bay-edge Newark units the steel heat exchanger can rust through from the inside. This is a safety failure because it lets combustion gas into the home. I inspect it on every visit, and if it is compromised I stop the repair and give you a written replacement quote.

FAQ

Williams in Newark questions, answered.

  • How far is Newark from your San Ramon base?
From San Ramon I take 680 south through Fremont and over to Newark, usually 35 to 45 minutes. Newark, Fremont, and Union City sit right together for us, so I group those calls and give you a focused arrival window rather than an all-day wait.
  • My Williams furnace is old, is it still safe to run?
It depends on the heat exchanger. If it is sound and the unit just needs a pilot, thermocouple, or valve, it is safe to repair and run. If the exchanger is rusted through, which I do see on Newark's bay-edge homes, I will not repair it and I will quote a safe replacement.
  • Is there a charge for the visit?
The diagnostic is $75 and I waive it with the repair. You get a written quote up front. Repairs carry a 1 year warranty and a new Williams install carries 10 year parts and 10 year labor.
