Williams in Clayton
Williams heating and cooling in Clayton.
Clayton sits at the foot of Mount Diablo, and its summers are hot and dry. Homes from the 1970s expansions, the Dana Hills subdivisions and the 1990s development around Oakhurst were generally built with central systems. A Williams furnace in Clayton usually heats an ADU, a converted garage, an addition or a detached room that the main system never reached.
A wall furnace in a space like that sits unused for months through the summer heat. Dust settles on the burner, insects build in the pilot tube and vent, and the thermocouple sits cold. The first chilly evening of fall is when that shows. Clayton is covered by our technician based in Benicia, and the $99 diagnostic is credited toward any repair you go ahead with.
Common repairs we handle.
- Pilot will not light after the summer off. After months of sitting, the pilot tube and orifice collect dust and spider webs. The pilot sputters, burns small, or will not light, and a small flame cannot heat the thermocouple enough. We clean the pilot assembly and orifice, set the flame, and test the thermocouple before relighting for the season.
- Dusty burner lighting unevenly. Dust and debris on the burner ports give an uneven, yellow-tipped flame and a slow light-off. We pull the burner, clean the ports and orifice, check the air shutter, and watch the flame spread evenly before the cover goes back on.
- Wall furnace in an addition cycling on and off. A heater in a small room can short cycle when the thermostat sits too close to it or the grille is crowded. The limit trips and the room never settles. We check the thermostat location, the limit and the clearances, and suggest a simple change that stops the cycling.

FAQ
Williams in Clayton questions, answered.
-
Our Clayton ADU heater has not run since spring. What should we check before winter?
Look for a lit pilot, and keep curtains and furniture back from the grille. If the pilot will not light or hold, stop trying and call. We clean the pilot and burner, test the thermocouple and gas valve, and inspect the vent before the first cold night. -
Can a Williams wall furnace heat a detached room that also gets very hot in summer?
For heat, yes, and it does that well without ducts. It does nothing for cooling, so a room that bakes in July needs its own answer for that. If you want heating and cooling in one unit, a ductless heat pump is the other route, and we can price both. -
Is it worth repairing an older Williams heater in a garage conversion?
Usually, if the heat exchanger is sound. Pilot, thermocouple, gas valve and thermostat parts are common and reasonably priced. A cracked exchanger gets a red tag and a replacement quote instead. Everything is in writing before work begins, under CSLB #1136642.
