Traulsen in Berkeley
Traulsen commercial service.
Berkeley runs one of the densest restaurant scenes in the East Bay. Shattuck Avenue's Gourmet Ghetto, the Telegraph corridor feeding the campus, Fourth Street, and dozens of small kitchens in between. Many of them bought Traulsen reach-ins used or new because the cabinets survive line abuse that folds cheaper doors and hinges within a couple of years. We service those cabinets on site, including older G-Series units that have been in the same Berkeley kitchen for fifteen years and are still worth fixing.
Old Traulsens and new Traulsens fail differently. The older mechanical-control cabinets mostly need honest sealed-system and airflow work. The newer ones carry the INTELA-TRAUL microprocessor, which logs fault codes worth reading before anyone swaps parts. I have seen Berkeley kitchens pay twice for the same warm-box complaint because the first tech never pulled the codes. We start there, then verify with gauges and a meter, and the written quote reflects what the machine actually needs.
Commercial work runs through our division Bay Area Refrigeration Service. EPA Section 608 Universal certified for refrigerant work, CSLB #1136642, $75 diagnostic waived with repair, seven days a week, because Berkeley kitchens do not close for the weekend.
Common repairs we do
What we close on the truck.
- Condenser coil fouling in tight line placements. Berkeley kitchens are old buildings with cramped lines, and the top-mounted Traulsen condenser sits right in the grease-laden airflow off the cook line. A fouled coil pushes head pressure up until the unit cuts out mid-service. We degrease and comb the coil, check the condenser fan motor while the shroud is off, and confirm pressures under load so the cabinet survives the next rush.
- Evaporator icing from defrost failures. When the defrost heater or termination sensor fails on a Traulsen freezer reach-in, the evaporator turns into an ice block, airflow dies, and the box creeps warm while the compressor runs constantly. The controller often flags it on newer units. We melt the coil out, test the heater and sensor circuit, replace the failed part, and verify a full defrost cycle completes.
- Compressor start component failures on older G-Series. Fifteen-year-old Berkeley Traulsens often present as a dead compressor when the actual failure is the start relay or capacitor. That is a cheap fix on a cabinet worth keeping. We test the start components before condemning the compressor, and I will tell you straight when a cabinet has reached the point where repair money is better spent on replacement.

FAQ
Traulsen in Berkeley questions, answered.
-
How long does it take you to get to Berkeley from San Ramon?
About 35 minutes through the Caldecott Tunnel on 24. We route Berkeley with Oakland, Piedmont, and Orinda stops, so East Bay days usually let us reach you same day. If your only reach-in is down with a full house booked, say so when you call and we bump the priority. -
Is a fifteen-year-old Traulsen still worth repairing?
Often yes, and I will give you a straight answer per cabinet. Traulsen boxes are built heavy, and a start component, fan motor, or gasket fix on an old G-Series is usually money well spent. When the sealed system itself is failing on a unit that old, I say so in the written quote and let you decide. -
What do repairs cost to diagnose?
$75 for the diagnostic visit, waived when you approve the repair. You get a written quote first, and the repair carries a one-year warranty.
