Trane in Palo Alto
Trane heating and cooling in Palo Alto.
Palo Alto runs from flat-roof Eichlers in Greenmeadow and Fairmeadow to large period homes in Crescent Park and Old Palo Alto. The Eichlers have no attic and no ducts, so a lot of the Trane work here is ductless heat pump retrofits. The older estates need ducted multi-zone systems to keep a big two-story house comfortable.
The Peninsula climate is mild, so cooling is light and Trane systems last a long time here. The Climatuff compressor barely gets stressed. What does come up is the small electrical parts after long idle periods, and on the high-end variable-speed installs the proprietary control board, which I flag for cost before we order it.
We run HVAC through Bay Area HVAC Service. I am EPA 608 Universal certified, you get a written quote up front, and the $75 diagnostic is waived with the repair. Repairs carry a 1-year warranty.
Common repairs we do
What we close on the truck.
- Ductless retrofit drain and line faults in Eichlers. Greenmeadow and Fairmeadow Eichlers get Trane ductless heat pumps because there is no duct space. The common service call afterward is a plugged condensate drain on the wall head or a refrigerant leak at the line set penetration. I clear the drain and pressure-test the lines.
- Zoning control failures in Crescent Park estates. Large Palo Alto homes run zoned Trane systems. When a zone board or damper actuator fails, the upstairs and downstairs fight each other. I diagnose the specific damper or control at fault so you are not replacing working equipment.
- Capacitor and contactor failures after idle seasons. Because Palo Alto cools so little, the AC sits unused and the run capacitor or contactor fails the first warm week. The compressor will not start. These are quick, low-cost parts and I keep them on the truck.

FAQ
Trane in Palo Alto questions, answered.
-
How long does it take you to get to Palo Alto from San Ramon?
From San Ramon it is about 45 minutes off peak down 680 and across. Palo Alto is on our Peninsula route with Atherton, Los Altos Hills and Saratoga, so we group those visits together. -
Can a Trane system go into my Eichler without ducts?
Yes. We use a Trane ductless heat pump with wall heads. It heats and cools the Eichler without needing attic or duct space, which these homes do not have. I assess the layout and give you a written plan. -
Is the high-end Trane board really that expensive to replace?
The proprietary variable-speed board is a real-money part, yes. That is why I verify it is the actual failure and not a sensor or wiring before I order it. You see the cost in writing before approving anything.
