Oakland is old housing stock for the most part. Craftsman bungalows in Rockridge and Temescal, Mediterranean homes in the flats, and larger houses up in the Oakland hills. Many of these had wall furnaces or gravity furnaces originally, so the Trane work here is often a heat pump or furnace retrofit into a house that was never built for ducted central air.

Old wall furnace to Trane heat pump conversions. Plenty of Oakland bungalows still have a gravity or wall furnace as the only heat. When it finally quits we put in a Trane heat pump, often ductless if there is no duct space. The follow-up calls are usually drain or sensor issues on the new heads, which I sort quickly.
Variable-speed board faults on hill home XV systems. In the Montclair and hills homes with high-end Trane XV equipment, the inverter control board is the part that bites. It throws codes and stops the compressor. The board is expensive, so I verify it is the board and not a thermistor or a loose connector before ordering.
Duct leakage in retrofitted flats. When central air gets retrofitted into an old Oakland flat, the ducting often runs through tight crawlspaces and leaks at the joints. The Trane unit works fine but the rooms do not cool evenly. I pressure-check the ducts and seal the leaks instead of upsizing the equipment.
