Trane in Berkeley

Trane heating and cooling in Berkeley.

Berkeley housing is old and mostly heating-focused. The Craftsman and brown-shingle homes in the hills were built around gravity furnaces and wall heaters, not central air, so when someone puts in a Trane it is often a heat pump retrofit to get both heating and cooling out of one system. Many of these houses never had ducts, so we are looking at ductless.

The climate is bay-moderated and cool, so cooling load is light. The heating side carries the year here. That pushes the failures toward the furnace and the heat pump's heating mode rather than a heat-stressed compressor. The hills also fog in, so moisture around the equipment is a real factor.

HVAC runs through our division Bay Area HVAC Service. I am EPA 608 Universal certified, we hold CSLB #1136642, and the $75 diagnostic is waived with the repair. We give a written quote before work, and we cover seven days.

Common repairs we do

What we close on the truck.

  • Heat pump defrost and reversing valve faults in the foggy hills. Up in the Berkeley hills the damp and fog make a Trane heat pump cycle into defrost often, and a sticking reversing valve or a bad defrost board leaves the unit blowing cold when it should heat. I test the valve and the defrost sensor to find which one is hanging up.
  • Ductless mini-split retrofit faults in homes without ductwork. A lot of the older Berkeley homes have no ducts, so the Trane systems here are ductless. The common calls are a clogged condensate line on the indoor head or a communication fault between the head and the outdoor unit. I clear the line or trace the comms wiring.
  • XV furnace igniter and pressure switch on the heating-heavy load. Because Berkeley leans on heating, the Trane furnace runs long and the hot surface igniter and the pressure switch wear. When the furnace fails to light or short-cycles, I check the igniter resistance and the pressure switch against a possibly blocked flue before swapping parts.

FAQ

Trane in Berkeley questions, answered.

  • How far is Berkeley from your San Ramon base?
From San Ramon to Berkeley is about 35 to 45 minutes, usually over the 24 through the tunnel or up the 580. We also serve Oakland, Piedmont and Orinda along that route, so if you are near any of those we can tighten the arrival window.
  • My Berkeley home has no ductwork. Is a Trane heat pump still an option?
Yes, as a ductless mini-split. Most of these older homes never had ducts, so we install and repair Trane ductless systems rather than forcing in a ducted unit. We quote the retrofit in writing first.
  • I mostly need heat, not cooling. Is a heat pump worth it here?
It can be, because a Trane heat pump gives you efficient heating and adds cooling for the rare hot spell. On rebates, we do not quote a number sight unseen. We confirm what is actually paying at estimate time.
