Tempstar in Sunnyvale

Tempstar heating and cooling in Sunnyvale.

Sunnyvale sits close enough to the Bay that outdoor units on the west side of town see salt-laden air year-round, and that accelerates corrosion on condenser coils and electrical contacts faster than most homeowners expect. The bulk of the city is mid-century tract housing, mostly slab-on-grade ranch homes that were built with ducted forced-air systems from the start, so Tempstar gas furnaces and split-system AC condensers are common here. The older Heritage District neighborhoods off Murphy Avenue have a mix of houses that were retrofitted with HVAC later, sometimes with creative duct runs that cause their own problems.

Bay Area HVAC Service reads the fault codes off the control board before touching anything else. On communicating QuietComfort systems that means connecting to the board directly and pulling the full fault history, not only the blink code on the LED. We check static pressure in the duct system, measure capacitor microfarads against spec, and do a combustion analysis on the furnace rather than guessing at a dirty sensor. We do not quote parts until we know what actually failed.

Bay Area HVAC Service is our HVAC division, operating out of San Ramon with regular runs down to Sunnyvale. The diagnostic fee is $75, and we credit that toward the repair if you proceed. You get a written quote before any work starts, no surprises on the invoice. We hold EPA Section 608 Universal certification and carry CSLB license 1136642.

Common repairs we do

What we close on the truck.

  • Hot surface igniter failure on Tempstar gas furnaces. The furnace starts the ignition sequence, the inducer spins up, but the burners never light and the board locks out after two or three tries. On Tempstar furnaces the silicon nitride igniter is a frequent failure point after five to seven years, and it tends to crack from vibration or thermal fatigue rather than just burning out cleanly. We confirm the igniter is open with a resistance check, source the OEM replacement, and verify flame sensor microamp output after the repair so we are not handing back a unit that will call us again in a month.
  • Flame sensor fouling causing nuisance lockouts. The furnace lights, runs for a few seconds, then shuts down on a safety trip, and this repeats every time a call for heat comes in. That pattern almost always points to a contaminated flame sensor rod that can no longer pass enough current to prove the flame to the board. On Sunnyvale units that have been running with low airflow or a dirty filter the sensor fouls faster than normal because incomplete combustion leaves a thin oxide layer on the rod. We clean the sensor, check the full flame circuit including the gas valve ground path, and run the furnace through several cycles before we leave.
  • Condenser capacitor and contactor wear on split-system AC. The outdoor unit hums but the compressor does not start, or the unit starts and trips the breaker within minutes. Capacitor degradation is the most common single cause of no-cool calls on Tempstar condensers in this area, and bayside corrosion on the contactor contacts compounds the problem by causing voltage drop under load. We measure capacitance and compare it to the nameplate rating, inspect the contactor face for pitting, and replace both if either is out of spec. The parts are Carrier-platform components, so sourcing is straightforward and we carry the most common values on the truck.

FAQ

Tempstar in Sunnyvale questions, answered.

  • Do you actually come out to Sunnyvale, or is that too far from San Ramon?
We run to Sunnyvale regularly. San Ramon to Sunnyvale is a straightforward shot down 680 and 237, and we have customers throughout the South Bay. Scheduling works the same way as anywhere else we cover, and you are not paying a travel surcharge on top of the diagnostic.
  • My house has an older Tempstar system. Is it worth repairing, or should I be looking at a replacement?
That depends on the age of the equipment, what failed, and what the repair costs relative to replacement. Tempstar is built on the Carrier platform, so the mechanical parts hold up as well as any Carrier unit, and a compressor or heat exchanger on a ten-year-old system is a different conversation than a capacitor on a fifteen-year-old one. We give you the repair cost in writing and tell you honestly where the unit sits in its service life. If there are utility rebates or manufacturer programs that apply to a replacement, we confirm what they actually pay at the time of your estimate rather than quoting a number that may have changed.
  • What does the $75 diagnostic include, and what kind of warranty do I get on the repair?
The $75 covers a full diagnosis: fault code pull, electrical measurements, visual inspection of the heat exchanger or coil, and a written explanation of what failed and why. If you approve the repair that day, the $75 comes off the invoice. Repairs carry a one-year warranty on parts and labor. If you are doing a full system installation rather than a repair, that work carries a ten-year parts warranty and a ten-year labor warranty.
