Tempstar in Richmond

Tempstar heating and cooling in Richmond.

Richmond sits close enough to the bay that salt-laden air works on outdoor coils and electrical contacts year-round. A lot of the housing here predates forced-air systems entirely, so you see a mix: older pre-war cottages in the Pullman District that went ductless at some point, mid-century ranchers in the Iron Triangle and Richmond Annex with original duct runs and ducted Tempstar furnaces, and a smaller share of newer construction with heat pumps. The bayside influence also keeps summers milder than the Tri-Valley, so AC calls are more about extended shoulder-season use and humidity management than peak 105-degree days. That shapes what goes wrong and when.

When a Tempstar unit comes in for diagnosis, we pull fault codes off the control board first. Tempstar uses the same ICP platform as Heil and Comfortmaker, so the diagnostic tree is familiar, and the parts that fail are shared across that whole family. We check the hot surface igniter and flame sensor on furnaces, test start and run capacitors on the condenser, and measure supply and return static pressure on ducted systems because undersized duct runs are common in the older ranchers around here. We do not swap parts until we know why the original failed. On units with outdoor coils that have seen a few Richmond winters, we inspect for corrosion on contactors and wire terminals before we put a new capacitor on a system that will just eat it again.

Bay Area HVAC Service, our HVAC division, runs out of San Ramon and covers Richmond regularly. The diagnostic is $75, and we waive it if you move forward with the repair that same visit. You get a written quote with a line-item breakdown before we touch anything. We carry EPA Section 608 Universal certification for refrigerant handling. CSLB license 1136642 covers all our work. Repairs are backed by a one-year warranty; new equipment installs carry ten years on parts and ten years on labor.

Common repairs we do

What we close on the truck.

  • Hot Surface Igniter Failure. The hot surface igniter on Tempstar gas furnaces is a silicon carbide element that degrades with thermal cycling. In Richmond homes where a furnace sits in a damp crawl space or uninsulated garage, seasonal humidity accelerates the micro-cracking that eventually cracks it through. The board calls for ignition, the igniter either glows too dim to light the burner or does not glow at all, and the system locks out after two or three attempts. We confirm the failure with a resistance check, replace the igniter with an OEM-compatible element, and verify burner flame before closing the call.
  • Flame Sensor Contamination Causing Short Cycling. A fouled flame sensor is the most common reason a Tempstar furnace lights, runs for a few seconds, then shuts back down. The sensor rod oxidizes over time and can no longer pass enough microamp current through the flame to satisfy the board. It reads no flame even though the burner is burning, and the unit cuts the gas valve and locks out. We clean the rod with a light abrasive, recheck the microamp reading against the board spec, and replace the sensor if the reading does not hold after cleaning. In Richmond crawl-space installs where airflow and moisture are a factor, we also check the heat exchanger while we are in there.
  • Condenser Capacitor and Contactor Wear from Salt-Air Exposure. Outdoor condensers within a few miles of the San Francisco Bay corrode faster than units inland. On Tempstar condensers in Richmond, we see start and run capacitors failing earlier than their rated life and contactors with pitted contact surfaces that can no longer pull in reliably under load. The symptom is usually a unit that hums but does not start, or one that trips the breaker on a warm afternoon. We replace the capacitor and contactor as a matched pair when either is worn, because a new capacitor driving through a pitted contactor is a short-term fix. We also clean and treat exposed terminals to slow the next round of corrosion.

FAQ

Tempstar in Richmond questions, answered.

  • Do you actually come out to Richmond, or is that too far from San Ramon?
Richmond is a regular stop for us. The drive from San Ramon runs up through the Caldecott Tunnel or across 580, and we schedule it routinely. Being based in San Ramon does not mean we only work the Tri-Valley side of the hills.
  • Is Tempstar a decent brand for Richmond's climate, or should I be looking at something else?
Tempstar is the same mechanical hardware as Carrier and Bryant, just badged differently and usually sold through independent contractors. The bones are sound. The consideration for Richmond specifically is the outdoor unit sitting in salt-influenced air. We factor that into equipment and installation decisions, including coil coating options and condenser placement, and confirm what rebates actually apply at estimate time rather than quoting numbers that may have changed.
  • What does the $75 diagnostic cover, and what kind of warranty comes with the repair?
The $75 gets you a full system diagnostic: fault code retrieval, electrical measurements, refrigerant pressure check if the system is running, and a written quote with everything itemized before we start work. If you approve the repair on that visit, the $75 comes off the bill entirely. Work we perform carries a one-year warranty covering both parts and labor. If we are putting in new equipment, that comes with a ten-year parts warranty and ten-year labor warranty through our installation program.
