Corroded fins reduce heat transfer and make the system work harder to hit the same output, which looks like a refrigerant problem until the coil surface is actually inspected. I check fin condition and cabinet integrity on every Pacifica service call, since it changes what I recommend for the unit's remaining service life.
Control Board and Connector Corrosion from Persistent Moisture. Low-voltage wiring harness connectors and control board terminals on outdoor units near the coast pick up a fine layer of corrosion from the salt-laden fog, and that corrosion adds resistance at the connection point long before it causes an outright failure. Symptoms show up as an intermittent no-start, a heat pump that will not switch into defrost properly, or a fault code that clears on its own and comes back.
