Tempstar in Alameda
Tempstar heating and cooling in Alameda.
Alameda is mostly pre-war and mid-century residential, a lot of it on the island proper with exposure to bay air on three sides. The housing mix skews toward older wood-frame homes that were retrofitted with forced-air at some point, and a fair number of those retrofits landed on Tempstar or one of its ICP siblings. The marine influence keeps peak summer temps modest compared to Livermore or Walnut Creek, but the salt humidity works on condenser coils and electrical contacts year-round in ways you don't see ten miles inland.
When I'm diagnosing a Tempstar system, I pull the control board fault codes first and read what the furnace actually recorded before anything else. On the communicating variable-speed models, the board is usually direct about the failure circuit. For the standard QuietComfort units, it's two-stage simpler but I still want to see lockout history before I start swapping parts. In Alameda specifically I always check the condenser cabinet interior for salt-accelerated corrosion on the capacitor terminals and contactor contacts even when the call is about a heating issue, because that corrosion shows up on units that look fine from the outside.
Bay Area HVAC Service covers Alameda out of our San Ramon base. The diagnostic is $75, and that fee comes off the repair total if you go ahead with the work. We put a written quote in front of you before any wrench turns. I hold EPA Section 608 Universal certification and we operate under CSLB license 1136642. Repair work carries a 1-year warranty. If you're looking at a replacement, our installations come with 10-year parts and 10-year labor coverage.
Common repairs we do
What we close on the truck.
- Hot Surface Igniter Failure. The HSI on Tempstar furnaces is a silicon nitride element that cycles through a lot of thermal shock over its life. When it cracks internally, the furnace goes to lockout after one or two failed ignition attempts and the board logs an ignition fault code. You'll see the inducer run, the gas valve open, but no flame and then a hard lockout. Replacement is straightforward once the crack is confirmed with a resistance check, and we carry the correct element for the QuietComfort series on the truck.
- Flame Sensor Contamination Causing Short-Cycling. A coated or oxidized flame sensor lets the burner light but cuts gas after two or three seconds because the board can't confirm a stable flame signal. The furnace restarts, lights again, cuts out again, and eventually locks out. On Alameda units that have run through several damp winters, that oxide layer builds up faster than on units in drier climates. Cleaning the rod and verifying microamp draw in the 2 to 4 microamp range while the burner is running confirms whether cleaning is enough or whether the sensor rod itself needs replacement.
- Condenser Capacitor and Contactor Wear on Outdoor Units. Salt air off the bay eats at the contactor's contact surfaces and at the capacitor's terminal connections. A weakened run capacitor causes the compressor to draw high amps on startup, run hot, and eventually trip the high-pressure limit or simply fail to start with a hard hum. The contactor pitting shows up as inconsistent engagement and sometimes as a unit that starts slowly or not at all on a hot afternoon. On Alameda installs I inspect both components during any AC or heat pump no-cooling call, because the corrosion is usually further along than the age of the unit would suggest.

FAQ
Tempstar in Alameda questions, answered.
-
Do you actually come out to Alameda, or is it too far from San Ramon?
Alameda is a regular stop for us. The drive from San Ramon via the 580 and Bay Bridge approach runs about 40 minutes depending on traffic, and we schedule it as a normal service call. There's no trip surcharge tacked on. -
Is Tempstar a reasonable fit for homes on Alameda Island, or would something else serve better?
Tempstar is solid Carrier-engineered hardware sold at a lower price point. For Alameda homes the bigger question is usually ducted versus ductless, not the brand. The older Victorians and Craftsmans near the Park Street area often lack the duct infrastructure for a central system to work efficiently, and a ductless heat pump handles the mild coastal climate well. The mid-century houses on the east side of the island usually have existing forced-air, and a Tempstar furnace or heat pump slots in as a direct replacement without a full redo. The salt air exposure does mean more frequent outdoor unit inspection is worth budgeting for. -
What does the $75 diagnostic actually include, and what kind of warranty do repairs come with?
The $75 covers a full system evaluation: I read the fault history off the control board, check electrical and mechanical components relevant to the reported symptom, and give you a written quote for anything I find before any work is authorized. If you approve the repair, the $75 applies toward the job total. Parts and labor on the repair are covered by a 1-year warranty from the date of service.
