- Flame sensor dropout. The flame rod oxidizes and the furnace lights then shuts down after a few seconds, short-cycling on every call for heat. I clean or replace the sensor and check the microamp signal so it holds a stable flame.
- Hot-surface ignitor cracks. The silicon-nitride ignitor on these Ruud units gets brittle and cracks, so you get a click and no flame. I replace it with the right part and verify the ignition sequence start to finish.
