- Cracked heat exchangers in older neglected furnaces. Furnaces that have gone years without a filter change or a tune-up run hotter than they should, and that stresses the heat exchanger until it cracks. I always run a combustion test on an older unit before I sign off that it is safe to keep running.
- Pilot and thermocouple failures on standing-pilot units. A good number of the older homes here still run a standing-pilot Ruud furnace instead of a hot-surface ignition model, and the thermocouple wears out so the pilot will not stay lit. I replace the thermocouple and relight the pilot the same visit.
- Blower motor failure from clogged filters. A filter that has not been changed in a long stretch chokes airflow, and the blower motor overheats and trips its internal limit until it will not run at all. I clean out what I can, replace the motor if the windings are already damaged, and set the owner up with the right filter size.

My furnace is older with a standing pilot. Is it worth fixing?
