Palo Alto has a distinct housing mix. You have stately older homes near downtown and Professorville, and a large stock of Eichler homes in the south end with their flat roofs and radiant-floor or compact forced-air heating. The newer remodels often went in with Rheem and Ruud equipment, and the Eichlers are a special case because of the slab and the roof layout.

The climate is bay-moderated and mild, so the cooling load is light, but the Eichlers heat and cool unevenly through all that glass. When I work a Ruud system here I think about the building type as much as the equipment.

Eichler ductless and compact-system service. Many Palo Alto Eichlers have no attic for ducts, so they run compact or ductless systems. When the Ruud equipment serving these faults I service the air handler and condenser and respect the slab and flat-roof constraints.
Hot-surface ignitor cracks. The silicon-nitride ignitor on the Ruud furnace cracks and the burner will not light. I replace it with the correct part and verify the ignition sequence from start to finish.
Flame sensor dropout. The flame rod oxidizes in the mild damp air and the furnace short-cycles. I clean or replace the sensor and confirm the microamp signal holds a stable flame.
