Ruud in Alameda

Ruud heating and cooling in Alameda.

Alameda sits on an island, so the air stays cool and damp most of the year and the heating season is mild. A Ruud furnace here does not run hard, but it cycles in short bursts on foggy mornings, and that short-cycling is what wears out ignition parts over time. We service Ruud and the Rheem equipment behind it across the whole island, from the old East End bungalows to the newer townhomes near the ferry terminal.

Many Alameda homes are pre-1940 Victorians and Craftsman bungalows that were retrofitted with ducts decades after they were built. The duct runs are often tight and the furnace is squeezed into a hall closet or a low basement. When a Ruud unit fits a space like that, I keep the common wear parts on the truck so the repair is one visit instead of two.

Salt air off the estuary is real. It corrodes flame sensors and the metal around the inducer faster than it does inland. So on Alameda calls I check the sensor and the inducer housing even when the complaint is something else, because that is where the island climate shows up first.

Common repairs we do

What we close on the truck.

  • Flame sensor fouling from short-cycling. Cool foggy mornings make a Ruud furnace fire in short bursts, and short cycles leave a film on the flame sensor. The furnace lights then drops out after a few seconds. I pull the sensor, clean it to bare metal, and check the burner gap so it holds flame instead of dropping out.
  • Draft-inducer motor corrosion. Salt air off the estuary gets into the inducer housing on island homes. The bearings get noisy or the motor stalls and the furnace locks out on a pressure-switch fault. I carry Rheem inducer assemblies, so a corroded one comes off and a new one goes on the same visit.
  • Hot-surface ignitor cracks. The silicon-nitride ignitor in a Ruud furnace goes brittle and cracks, usually after a few seasons of damp cycling. You get a click, a delay, and no heat. I keep the correct ignitor for these units on the truck and verify the resistance before I leave.

FAQ

Ruud in Alameda questions, answered.

  • Do you charge to come out to Alameda from San Ramon?
Our diagnostic is $75 and we waive it if you go ahead with the repair. From San Ramon we run through the tunnel toward Oakland and over to the island, so we group Alameda with our Oakland and San Leandro calls to keep the trip efficient. We cover the whole island.
  • My Alameda house has no real ductwork, just floor furnaces. Can you still help?
Yes. A lot of the older island homes still run on a single floor or wall furnace. We service those and we also handle ductless mini-split retrofits when you want zoned heat without tearing into a plaster-walled Victorian to add ducts.
  • What warranty comes with the work?
A repair carries a one-year warranty on the part and the labor. A full install through our HVAC division, Bay Area HVAC Service, carries 10-year parts and 10-year labor. We give you the written quote before any work starts.
