Laurel Street and the blocks around it add apartments and older bungalows into the mix, so I see everything from a original 1950s unit to a Kenmore bought at the Hillsdale Sears a decade before it closed.
Whatever decade it's from, the badge doesn't tell you who built it. Whirlpool, LG, and Frigidaire have all made Kenmores, and I read the model prefix off the data plate before I decide what part to order. - Compact ice maker modules in Eichler built-in cabinets. The counter-depth and undercounter Kenmores sized for original Eichler cabinet openings tend to run older modular ice makers, and after a decade the module sticks or the fill tube freezes shut before the module itself actually fails. I test the module at its service points and check the fill line separately, since replacing the whole assembly is rarely the fix it looks like.
- Evaporator fan noise on Whirlpool-built 106 top freezers. A grinding or squealing sound from behind the freezer wall on the older 106-series Kenmores common in San Carlos's original tract homes usually means the evaporator fan bearing is drying out. Left alone it seizes, the fresh food section warms up, and what would have been a fan motor becomes a spoiled-groceries call. I pull the back panel, meter the motor, and replace it with the correct manufacturer part.
- Water inlet valve buildup on side-by-sides near the apartments. The rental units and apartments around Laurel Street and San Carlos Avenue see heavier daily use on the ice and water dispenser, and Peninsula water hardness scales the inlet valve screen over a few years. Ice production slows, then stops, before anyone notices the water flow to the dispenser has already dropped. I check the actual flow rate before I replace the valve, since half of these calls turn out to be a clogged screen instead.

My Eichler's built-in fridge is a weird size. Can you even work on it?
Most of the built-in Kenmores from that era are standard compressor and control units squeezed into a shallower cabinet, so the repair itself isn't different, only the clearance to pull it out is tighter. I've worked enough of San Carlos's Eichler kitchens to know how to get behind them without pulling cabinetry apart.
