GrandAire in Dublin
GrandAire heating and cooling in Dublin.
Dublin sits inland enough that summer afternoon temps regularly push into the 90s and above, especially east of the 680 corridor toward Fallon Road and the newer tract developments off Tassajara. A lot of that housing stock was built in the 2000s and 2010s by production builders who spec'd value-tier HVAC to hit a price point. GrandAire shows up frequently in those installs. It is Carrier-family equipment, plain single-stage, and it does the job until the capacitor or flame sensor goes.
When I pull a GrandAire furnace or condenser out of a Dublin garage or side yard, I start by pulling fault codes off the control board and watching a full cycle before I touch anything. These units flash codes for ignition lockout, pressure switch faults, and limit trips that each point somewhere specific. I do not swap igniters because they are cheap. I find out whether the board is calling for ignition, whether the inducer proves pressure, and what the supply temperatures are doing before I order anything. On cooling calls in July heat I check static, charge, and the capacitor under load because that is where GrandAire condensers fail consistently in the Tri-Valley climate.
Bay Area HVAC Service is our HVAC division, operating out of San Ramon, and Dublin is a routine service call for us. The diagnostic is $75, and we waive it when you go ahead with the repair. You get a written quote before we start work. I carry EPA Section 608 Universal certification; our CSLB license number is 1136642. Repairs come with a 1-year warranty. If your GrandAire system needs replacing rather than repairing, we confirm what rebates are actually paying at the time of the estimate.
Common repairs we do
What we close on the truck.
- Igniter failure and ignition lockout. GrandAire furnaces use a silicon nitride igniter that cracks or loses continuity after a few heating seasons, especially in attic or garage installs where temperature swings are wide. The board calls for heat, the inducer runs, but there is no glow and the unit locks out after two or three tries and flashes a code. I confirm the igniter is open with a meter, check that the board is actually delivering voltage to the circuit, and replace the igniter. Because this is a Carrier-platform part, it is stocked locally and almost always same or next-day.
- Flame sensor short-cycling the burner. A coated or oxidized flame sensor reads a weak microamp signal and the board drops the gas valve within a few seconds of ignition as a safety shutdown. You hear the burner light and then cut off, and it repeats until lockout. On GrandAire units I see this happen earlier in the season than on higher-spec equipment because the sensor rod coating is thinner from the factory. I clean the rod, verify the signal with a meter in the microamp range, and test through several cycles. If the signal is still marginal I replace the sensor, which is inexpensive and on the shelf.
- Capacitor and contactor failure on the condenser. Dublin summers are dry and hot, and a GrandAire condenser running all day in direct afternoon sun on a west-facing pad is hard on the run capacitor. The typical call is a unit that hums but the compressor or fan does not start, or a system that pulls high amps for a short time before the breaker trips. I test capacitance under load, check contactor pitting, and confirm refrigerant pressures are in range before calling the job done. Both parts are inexpensive, usually stocked in the van, and the repair is the same afternoon in most cases.

FAQ
GrandAire in Dublin questions, answered.
-
Do you actually come out to Dublin, or do I need to find someone local?
Dublin is a regular run for us from our San Ramon base. We cover the Tri-Valley as core territory, so scheduling in Dublin is the same as scheduling anywhere else in the area. No extra trip charge. -
Is GrandAire equipment worth repairing, or should I just replace a unit in a Dublin home?
Depends on the age and what failed. If you have a GrandAire furnace or AC that is under ten years old and the failure is a sensor, capacitor, or igniter, repairing it makes straightforward sense. The Carrier-family parts are cheap and available, so the repair cost stays reasonable. If the unit is older, has had multiple failures, or the heat pump efficiency is a real concern given how hard Dublin summers push the equipment, I will tell you that honestly during the diagnostic and walk you through what replacement actually costs and what rebates are currently paying. -
What does the $75 diagnostic cover, and what kind of warranty do I get?
The $75 gets you a full diagnostic: fault code pull, cycle observation, measurements under load, and a written quote for the repair. If you approve the work, that $75 comes off the bill entirely. Repairs carry a 1-year warranty on parts and labor. If we end up doing a full system installation instead, that work is covered by a 10-year parts and 10-year labor warranty.
