GrandAire in Alamo
GrandAire heating and cooling in Alamo.
Alamo sits in a pocket of the Diablo Valley where summer afternoons regularly hit triple digits and the hillside ranches up toward Roundhill Country Club stay exposed to full sun from mid-morning on. Most of the housing stock here is 1960s and 1970s ducted construction: slab-on-grade ranchers and split-levels with existing gas furnaces and central AC, the kind of install where a GrandAire single-stage condenser or value gas furnace makes sense as a budget replacement. These are plain, builder-grade Carrier-platform units, and they do exactly what you expect from them: they run, they wear, and the common failure parts are cheap and stocked locally.
When a GrandAire unit calls us out, we start at the board and the fault codes before we touch anything else. On the furnace side that means reading the LED blink sequence off the control board, checking flame sensor microamps under live fire, and actually watching the ignition sequence rather than guessing at it. On the cooling side, Alamo summers are hard on capacitors and contactors in outdoor condensers, so we load-test the run cap and check contactor pitting before chasing anything else. We do not swap parts on a hunch and bill you for the experiment.
Bay Area HVAC Service is our HVAC division, operating out of San Ramon about ten minutes from Alamo. Diagnostic is $75, and that fee comes off the repair if you approve the work. We hand you a written quote before anything gets opened up. Our technicians hold EPA Section 608 Universal certification, and the company is licensed under CSLB 1136642. Repair work carries a one-year warranty; new equipment installations come with ten years on parts and ten years on labor.
Common repairs we do
What we close on the truck.
- Furnace Short-Cycling on Flame Sensor Failure. The GrandAire single-stage gas furnace will light, run briefly, then drop out and retry, often three times before locking out. The control board logs this as a flame-sensing fault. The cause is nearly always a carbon-coated flame sensor that can no longer pass enough microamp current to satisfy the board. We pull the sensor, confirm the reading is below threshold, clean or replace it, and verify steady flame current through a full heat call before leaving.
- Condenser Not Cooling, Run Capacitor Failed. On a hot Alamo afternoon the GrandAire condenser will seem to start, the fan may spin, but the compressor hums and draws high amperage without pumping. That points to a failed dual run capacitor, which is the most common summer failure on these units. We test capacitance under load, replace the cap with a matching spec part, and recheck compressor start and running amperage. The contactor gets inspected at the same time since pitting from repeated high-temperature switching is common on outdoor units that work hard all summer.
- Cracked Hot-Surface Igniter. GrandAire furnaces use a silicon nitride hot-surface igniter that becomes brittle with age and heat cycling. A hairline crack means the igniter will not reach full temperature, so the gas valve opens, no ignition occurs, and the board locks out on ignition failure rather than flame-sense failure. The two faults look similar from a thermostat call, but the blink code tells us which one it is. Igniter replacement is a short repair, parts are on the shelf, and the unit is back on the same visit in most cases.

FAQ
GrandAire in Alamo questions, answered.
-
Do you actually come out to Alamo, or is this a distant service area?
San Ramon is our base, and Alamo is a straightforward drive down Danville Boulevard from our shop. It is well within our regular service area, no trip surcharge, same or next-day scheduling most of the week. -
Is GrandAire equipment a reasonable fit for the homes out here, or should I be looking at something else?
It depends on what you are doing with it. GrandAire is the value end of the Carrier-family line, single-stage, no communicating controls, built to a price. For a rental unit, an ADU, or a straight swap on an older Alamo ranch where the budget does not justify premium equipment, it is a defensible choice. The parts commonality with the rest of the Carrier platform means maintenance stays affordable over the life of the unit. If you want variable-speed, communicating, or higher SEER2 efficiency for a primary residence, we would point you toward the upper Carrier tiers instead. We can walk through the tradeoff at the estimate. -
What does the $75 diagnostic actually include, and what kind of warranty do I get on the repair?
The diagnostic covers a full hands-on evaluation of the unit: fault code pull, electrical checks, mechanical inspection, and a firm written quote on whatever we find. If you approve the repair that day, the $75 is credited against the bill. The repair itself carries a one-year warranty on both parts and labor. If we end up putting in new equipment, that comes with ten years on parts and ten years on labor. We also check what utility or state rebates are currently paying at estimate time and include that in what we present to you, though we do not quote a number until we confirm what the program is actually offering.
