Cooper&Hunter in San Carlos
Cooper&Hunter in San Carlos kitchens.
San Carlos downtown along Laurel Street is mostly older buildings with apartments and offices stacked above the restaurants, and a fair number of those upper units run a Cooper&Hunter head because there was never a way to run new ductwork down through an occupied restaurant kitchen below. Further out toward the Highlands and Devonshire, the same brand shows up in garage conversions and additions on the bigger wooded lots.
Cooper&Hunter does the job when it's installed right, and in San Carlos the two trouble spots sit at opposite ends of the city. Above Laurel Street the mechanical space is tight and the line set gets bent hard to fit behind a false ceiling. Out toward the Highlands the wooded lots drop enough leaf litter and pollen to clog an outdoor coil faster than a homeowner expects.
We run a technician based on the Peninsula in San Mateo County, so San Carlos sits on his regular route with Belmont and Redwood City. The $99 diagnostic comes off the bill when you book the repair, I write up the quote before starting, and we work 7 days a week.
Common repairs we do
What we close on the truck.
- Flare leak in a tight mechanical space above Laurel Street. Units installed above the restaurants downtown often have the line set crammed behind a false ceiling with sharp bends to clear the structure. Those bends stress the flare joints, and a slow leak there shows up as a head that runs constantly but never quite hits temperature. I reflare the joint properly, support the line so it can't shift again, and recharge to weight.
- Outdoor coil clogged with leaf litter near the Highlands. Homes backing up to the wooded open space toward the Highlands and Devonshire pull more leaf litter and pollen into the outdoor coil than a flat downtown lot does. A clogged coil raises head pressure and trips the unit on a warm day. I clean the fin stock and check that the fan is actually moving the air it's rated for before I call the coil the fix.
- Indoor sensor fault causing short-cycling. A head that turns on and off every few minutes usually points to a drifted thermistor reading the room wrong rather than a compressor problem. I confirm it with a meter against the actual room temperature, then replace the sensor. It's a cheap part and a fast fix once it's confirmed.

FAQ
Cooper&Hunter in San Carlos questions, answered.
-
Do you actually cover San Carlos, or is that out of your way from San Ramon?
We cover it directly. Our Peninsula-based technician runs San Carlos on the same route as Belmont and Redwood City, so it's local coverage, not a special trip from San Ramon. -
Does the restaurant heat from Laurel Street affect a mini-split installed above the kitchen?
It can. A head sitting over a working kitchen deals with more ambient heat than a normal upstairs room, so I check the actual load in that space rather than size it off the square footage alone. -
How much is the diagnostic if I end up not needing a repair?
It's $99 if we come out and there's nothing to repair, or if you decide not to move forward. Book the repair instead and that $99 comes off the total, and either way you get a written quote before any work starts.
