Carrier in Alamo

Carrier heating and cooling in Alamo.

Alamo runs hot. It sits inland behind the hills, so summer afternoons climb well past what the bay-side towns ever see, and the cooling load is real. Carrier Infinity systems are common here because the homes are large custom builds that need staged or variable-capacity equipment to hold temperature across big open floor plans.

A lot of Alamo houses are two-story custom homes from the 1980s through the 2000s, often with two or three Carrier systems zoning the upstairs bedrooms separately from the main level. When one zone falls behind on a hot day, the problem is usually a zone damper or a zone board, not the equipment. We trace the whole zoning layout before we touch the condenser.

Carrier and Bryant are identical equipment, and on the bigger Alamo installs we see both nameplates. The equipment holds up well and parts are easy to get. The Infinity communicating boards and the variable-speed ECM modules are the costly parts, so on a no-cool or no-heat call I confirm the fault on the meter before quoting a board.

Common repairs we do

What we close on the truck.

  • Zone damper motor failure on multi-zone systems. Alamo homes with upstairs and downstairs zones lose a damper actuator and one zone either stays stuck open or stuck shut. You feel it as one floor never cooling on a hot afternoon. We test the damper motor and the zone board, then replace the actuator. It is a far cheaper fix than people fear.
  • Infinity variable-speed ECM blower module. The variable-speed blower module on an Infinity air handler fails and you get no airflow or a blower that ramps and quits. On a big two-story load this is felt immediately. The module is a real cost, so I verify the motor windings and the control signal before I commit to the part.
  • TXV and refrigerant charge on long line sets. Large Alamo homes often have long refrigerant runs to the outdoor units. A sticking thermostatic expansion valve or a slow charge loss shows up as weak cooling in peak heat. We check superheat and subcooling, find the actual cause, and correct the charge or replace the valve rather than just topping off.

FAQ

Carrier in Alamo questions, answered.

  • You are close to us in San Ramon, right?
Very close. From San Ramon we run up through Danville to Alamo in a short drive, and Lafayette and Walnut Creek are right there too. It is one of our fastest routes, so scheduling in Alamo is easy.
  • One floor of my house never gets cool. Is the AC failing?
Usually not the AC itself. On Alamo multi-zone Carrier systems a single floor falling behind almost always points to a failed zone damper or zone board. We test the zoning first so you are not paying for equipment you do not need.
  • Is it worth fixing an Infinity board or replacing the system?
If the rest of the system is sound and not too old, fixing the board is worth it even though the board is pricey. If the equipment is near end of life, we lay out both options in writing and you decide. No pressure either way.
