Bryant in Pinole

Bryant heating and cooling in Pinole.

Much of Pinole's housing went up in the postwar boom of the 1940s through the 1960s. A house from that era was built around a small furnace and the ducts sized for it. When a modern Bryant furnace, or a furnace with central air, goes into the same space, the return air is often the weak link.

A furnace that cannot breathe runs hot, trips its high-limit switch and cycles off before the house warms up. The same shortage of air freezes the indoor coil on the AC side in summer. Pinole is covered by our technician, who is based in Benicia. We charge $99 for the diagnostic, credited toward the repair, and give you a written quote before any work. CSLB #1136642.

Common repairs we handle.

  • Furnace short cycling on the high-limit switch. The high-limit switch shuts the burners off when the heat exchanger gets too hot, which is usually an airflow problem. We measure the temperature rise across the furnace, compare it with the range on the rating plate, and check the filter, blower speed and return size. A bigger return or a corrected blower setting often ends the cycling.
  • Blower motor weak or failing. Older Bryant furnaces use a blower motor with a run capacitor; variable-speed models use an ECM motor with a control module. A weak blower starves both heating and cooling. We test the motor and its capacitor or module and replace the part that has failed.
  • AC coil freezing on a hot afternoon. When airflow is short, the evaporator coil drops below freezing and ice blocks the air. We have you run the fan to thaw it, then check the filter, blower and return and confirm the refrigerant charge. Topping off refrigerant without fixing the airflow only brings the ice back.

FAQ

Bryant in Pinole questions, answered.

  • Our Pinole furnace runs briefly, shuts off, then starts again. What causes that?
Short cycling on a gas furnace often comes from the high-limit switch opening because the furnace is overheating, usually from a dirty filter or too little return air. It can also be a flame sensor or a thermostat problem. The diagnostic sorts out which.
  • Is it safe to close vents in unused rooms of our Pinole Valley house?
A few is fine, but closing many adds restriction the system was not designed for. The furnace runs hotter, the coil runs colder and the blower works harder. If rooms are too warm or too cold, we would rather balance the ducts than choke them.
  • What filter should we use in our Bryant furnace?
The one the furnace and its return can handle. A very dense filter in a small return can restrict airflow as much as a dirty one. We check the pressure drop across the filter and recommend a size and rating that keeps the air clean without choking the system.
