- Strong fan sound but smoke still drifts past the hood. When the blower sounds healthy and smoke still escapes, the restriction is usually in the duct or the exterior damper. We check the damper, look for crushed or disconnected duct, and clean the grease filters and blower wheel.
- Gas smell near one knob when that burner is on. A faint smell near a single knob, strongest while that burner runs, can come from a worn valve seal. We leak-test the valve and its fittings and replace the valve rather than try to reseal it.
- Oven that bakes true at 325 but runs off at 450. A temperature sensor can drift in a way that only shows at high heat. We check its resistance at room temperature and against a probe with the oven hot, and replace it if it reads off at the top of the range.

Often we can trace it from the hood and from where it exits outside, and the path between them tells us a lot. We check the reachable sections and the damper. If a hidden section inside a ceiling looks crushed or disconnected, we tell you, since opening the ceiling is a job for a contractor. -
Our Decoto house smells of gas near one knob when that burner is on. Should we stop using it?
Yes. Turn that burner off, and if the smell continues with every knob off, close the shutoff behind the range and air the room. A strong smell means leave the house and call the gas utility from outside. A leak at the valve is a repair we handle, and we leak-test before we leave. -
The Bertazzoni in our Union Landing house replaced a much older range. Does it need a different gas connection?
Not a different gas, but the right parts. A newer range should have its pressure regulator in place and a connector in good condition, sized for the range. When our technician is there for a repair, those are part of what we look at, since a poor connection weakens every burner.
