Half Moon Bay is the anchor of the Coastside, and we cover the smaller towns around it too, Montara, Moss Beach, and El Granada, all running the same foggy, salt-air climate off the ocean. Main Street and the harbor restaurants sit right in that marine layer, and it rarely gets hot enough here for cooling to be the main concern the way it is inland. Most of the work I do on the coast is about heating and hot water, not air conditioning.
Salt air is hard on outdoor equipment, plain and simple. American Standard condenser and heat pump cabinets sitting out here corrode faster than the same units would forty minutes inland, and the aluminum coil fins take the worst of it. Heat pumps carry a lot of the heating load on the coast since straight cooling demand is low, and that means the outdoor unit runs through more heating and defrost cycles across a damp, cold winter than it would in a warmer town.

- Salt air corrosion on outdoor coils and cabinets. Coastside condensers and heat pumps sit in constant salt fog, and the aluminum coil fins and cabinet fasteners corrode years faster than inland units. Corroded fins choke airflow across the coil and cut capacity. We clean and treat what can still be saved and tell you honestly when corrosion has gone past the point of a simple repair.
- Heat pump defrost cycle failures in damp cold. With cooling demand low on the coast, the American Standard heat pump carries most of the heating load, and it depends on its defrost cycle to clear ice off the outdoor coil through a damp Half Moon Bay winter. When the defrost board or sensor fails, ice builds up and heating output drops right when you need it most. We test the board and sensor before replacing any major component.
- Water heater vent and burner corrosion. The moist salt air on the coast works its way into gas water heater vent pipes and burner assemblies faster than it does further inland, and corrosion there affects both efficiency and safe venting. Is it really worth driving out to the coast, or should I expect a long wait?
We have a technician based on the Peninsula in San Mateo County who already covers San Mateo and Pacifica, so Half Moon Bay is a natural extension over Highway 92, not an afterthought. We do not promise same-day service, but it is not the long special trip from San Ramon that it might sound like. -
Why does my Half Moon Bay heat pump ice up so much more than a friend's unit inland?
The coast runs colder and damper for more of the year, so your heat pump goes through defrost cycles more often just to keep the outdoor coil clear. If the defrost board or sensor is worn out, that ice does not clear properly and heating output suffers.
