The whole Coastside. Along with Half Moon Bay we regularly go out to Montara, Moss Beach and El Granada. Our technician is based on the Peninsula in San Mateo County, so this whole stretch of coast is a normal part of his route, not a special trip.

My Trane equipment is only a few years old but already looks rusty. Is that normal here?

For the coast, yes. Salt air corrodes coil fins, contactors and cabinet fasteners faster than it would inland, sometimes within a handful of years. I can't stop the salt air, but I check corrosion-prone parts on every visit so a small problem doesn't turn into a failed board or a coil leak.

It rarely gets hot here with the fog. Do people still run AC?

Some do, mostly for the handful of warm days a year, but a lot of Coastside homes lean more on the furnace or heat pump for the damp cool months than on cooling. I service whichever side of the system is actually giving you trouble.

Half Moon Bay is the anchor of the Coastside, and I treat the whole stretch as one service area, Main Street and the harbor restaurants, then out through Montara, Moss Beach and El Granada. The marine layer keeps this coast cool and damp most of the year, so the cooling load is light, but the salt air is hard on equipment in a way inland Trane systems never deal with.

Salt-laden moisture gets into everything out here, coil fins, contactor points, control board relays, even the fasteners on the cabinet. A Trane condenser that would last decades inland can show real corrosion damage on the coast in a fraction of that time, so a lot of what I do on the Coastside is catching corrosion before it turns into a failed part.

Condenser coil fin corrosion from salt air. The salt air off the harbor eats through the aluminum fins on a Trane condenser coil faster here than anywhere else in the county. Corroded fins lose surface area, the system loses capacity, and eventually a fin pinhole turns into a slow refrigerant leak. I check coil condition on every Coastside call, not just when there's a complaint.
Corroded contactors and control board relays. Damp, salt-laden air gets into the outdoor disconnect and the control compartment and corrodes the contactor points and the relay contacts on the board. The system either won't start on a damp morning or cycles on its own. Cleaning contacts is a short-term fix. Once the corrosion is through the metal, the part gets replaced.
Furnace heat exchanger corrosion from marine air. On the Coastside, moist salt air pulled in through the combustion air intake accelerates rust on a furnace heat exchanger faster than an inland home ever sees. A rusted-through heat exchanger is a safety issue, not a comfort one, so I check it with a combustion analyzer and I don't guess on this part.
