Ruud in Albany

Ruud heating and cooling in Albany.

Albany is packed tight into 1.8 square miles between Berkeley and El Cerrito, and most of the housing is compact 1920s to 1940s stucco and wood bungalows along the Marin Avenue grid, plus ADUs, basement units, and the UC Village family housing down along Buchanan Street below Albany Hill. A Ruud furnace serves this stock well, and we carry the wear parts these older units need.

Albany shares Berkeley's cool, damp marine-layer climate, so furnaces here short-cycle on foggy mornings rather than running long steady cycles. Flame sensors and ignitors take the brunt of it. When I get a no-heat call in Albany, those two parts are the first things I look at, because that is where this climate breaks things.

A lot of Albany's small bungalows and basement units never had ducts, and central air conditioning is close to nonexistent here. For those, a ductless mini-split installed during a remodel is usually the cleaner answer, and we handle both the repair of the old wall furnace and the retrofit.

Common repairs we do

What we close on the truck.

  • Flame sensor fouling in Marin Avenue bungalows. Albany's cool, damp mornings make a Ruud furnace short-cycle, and that films the flame sensor until the burner lights and drops out again. I scrub the sensor down to bare metal and dial the burner gap back in so the flame stays lit.
  • Hot-surface ignitor failure in original bungalow furnaces. The silicon-nitride ignitor in these older units goes brittle and cracks, common in Albany's original 1920s and 1930s bungalow furnaces that damp-cycle all winter. You hear a click and get no heat. I stock the correct ignitor and test its resistance reading before heading out.
  • Draft-inducer bearing wear in tight basement units. Damp bay air wears the inducer motor bearings, and the furnace locks out when the pressure switch will not close. I replace the inducer assembly in one visit, which matters in Albany's tight basement and ADU installs where a return trip is a hassle.

FAQ

Ruud in Albany questions, answered.

  • How long does it take you to get to Albany from San Ramon?
We head up 580 or over 24 to 80, grouping Albany with our Berkeley and Richmond Inner East Bay work. It is about a 40 to 45 minute run and a booked window gets you a written arrival time.
  • My Albany bungalow has no ducts, only a wall furnace. What are my options?
We service the wall furnace directly, and when you want zoned heat without tearing into an old bungalow's plaster, we install ductless mini-splits. Both are common in Albany's compact housing stock.
  • If I go ahead with the repair, does the diagnostic charge get credited?
Yes, we waive the $99 diagnostic when you approve the repair. You get a written quote up front, and the repair carries a one-year warranty on parts and labor.
