Mitsubishi in Portola Valley

Mitsubishi heating and cooling in Portola Valley.

Portola Valley sits in oak-and-redwood hills off Alpine Road and Portola Road, and a good number of the mid-century modern homes in the Ladera-adjacent pockets never had ductwork to begin with, which makes Mitsubishi ductless the natural retrofit rather than an add-on. Ranch properties out toward Skyline often run several zones across the main house and a detached office or workshop, all off the same outdoor unit.

This is a wildfire-aware community, and frequent PG&E public safety power shutoffs have pushed a lot of interest here toward heat pumps and backup strategies. A ductless system draws less power than a furnace blower forcing hot air through ducts, which makes it easier to run off a generator or battery bank during an outage, though the head itself still needs power and isn't a backup source on its own.

We completed Mitsubishi factory training, we give written quotes, and we work clean on wooded, sometimes hard-to-reach lots. On a ranch property running several zones, I read the code and isolate the one head at fault rather than calling the whole system into doubt.

Common repairs we do

What we close on the truck.

  • Fan noise on a head in a quiet room. The open, low-slung layout common in Portola Valley's mid-century homes carries sound further than a house with more walls, so a buzz or whine from a wall head gets noticed fast. We pull the cover, check the cross-flow fan for debris and the bearing, and balance or replace so it goes quiet again.
  • Single zone down in a converted office or workshop. A detached office or workshop on a ranch property runs its own head off the multi-zone system, and when that zone dies it's almost always the head's own board or thermistor. We confirm by code and repair that unit without touching the zones serving the main house.
  • Zone fails to restart after a power shutoff. A head that rides out a PG&E shutoff fine sometimes won't restart cleanly once power comes back, especially if the restoration carries a surge. The control board can lock into a fault code that looks like a bigger failure than it is. We reset or replace the board, confirm the zone comes back correctly, and note it for anyone running a battery system that needs the head to restart on its own.

FAQ

Mitsubishi in Portola Valley questions, answered.

  • Portola Valley is a drive from San Ramon. How does scheduling work?
We come down I-680 south and over on CA-92 or I-280, usually 50 to 60 minutes. Portola Valley is booked on our Peninsula day with Hillsborough, and we send a written arrival time ahead of the visit.
  • One zone in my workshop stopped. Is the whole system failing?
No. If the main house zones still run fine, the outdoor unit and refrigerant side are healthy. A dead zone on its own is that head's board or sensor, and we replace it at the head.
  • Will a Mitsubishi heat pump help us through a PG&E shutoff?
It won't run without power, so it isn't backup power by itself. What it does is draw less power than a lot of heating systems, so if you're pairing it with a generator or battery bank for an outage, it asks less of that backup than a furnace would. The $75 diagnostic is waived when you move ahead with any repair.
