Run Capacitor and Contactor Wear. A Heil condenser working a full San Carlos cooling season puts real strain on the run capacitor, and a weak capacitor forces the compressor to draw high locked-rotor amps on every startup. That in turn pits the contactor contacts faster than they would wear otherwise. We measure capacitance with a meter rather than guess from age, inspect the contactor face, and replace both together when either one is out of spec.
Flame Sensor Fouling. On the older furnaces still running in San Carlos's mid-century homes, the flame sensor accumulates an oxide layer that eventually drops the microamp reading below what the control board needs to confirm ignition.
