Heil in Los Altos
Heil heating and cooling in Los Altos.
Los Altos sits in a mild but not forgiving climate. The Santa Clara Valley floor holds summer heat better than the coast, so the AC runs hard through July and August, and the heat pumps we service here pull double duty. A lot of the housing stock is 1950s and 1960s ranch-style construction: ducted forced-air furnaces and central condensers, which is exactly the setup Heil sold well into. We see a fair number of Ion communicating systems on the newer remodels and QuietComfort single-stage equipment on the older installs, both running on the same ICP platform that Carrier and Bryant share.
Heil boards speak Carrier fault codes, so pulling the code sequence from a blinking status LED tells us exactly where to start. On gas furnaces we check the hot surface igniter for hairline cracks under load, run the flame sensor through a microamp draw test rather than just cleaning and hoping, and cycle the inducer draft through its full range before we commit to a diagnosis. On the condenser side, Los Altos sits close enough to the Bay that outdoor coils and contactors see more corrosion than inland Tri-Valley units do. We test capacitors and contactors under load, not only with a meter at rest.
Bay Area HVAC Service is the HVAC division of ADRIUM Service Solutions, licensed under CSLB 1136642 and EPA Section 608 Universal certified. Our diagnostic fee is $75, and we waive it if you go ahead with the repair on the same visit. Before any work starts you get a written quote, period. We carry 10-year parts and 10-year labor coverage on installations, and repairs come with a 1-year warranty on the work.
Common repairs we do
What we close on the truck.
- Hot Surface Igniter Failure. The Heil/ICP silicon nitride igniter is fragile and typically cracks after 5 to 8 years of thermal cycling. The furnace starts the ignition sequence, the inducer spins up, gas valve opens, but there is no flame and the board locks out with a fault code. We pull the igniter, measure resistance, and if it is out of spec or visibly cracked we replace it with the Carrier-family OEM part we stock. Because we carry the part, this is usually a same-call fix.
- Flame Sensor Short-Cycling the Burner. A coated or corroded flame sensor reads low microamps and the control board drops the gas valve 4 to 8 seconds after ignition as a safety shutoff. The furnace then retries, lights briefly, and shuts off again in a repeating cycle. We do a microamp draw test with the sensor in the flame rather than just pulling and polishing it blind. If the reading recovers to spec after cleaning, we confirm it holds across three full cycles before closing the call.
- Condenser Capacitor and Contactor Corrosion. Los Altos outdoor units see salt-laden air off the Bay, and run capacitors and contactors corrode faster here than they do further inland. A weak run capacitor causes the compressor to draw high amps, run hot, and eventually short-cycle on the internal thermal overload. We test capacitance under load and check the contactor pitting with a voltage-drop test across the contacts. A failed capacitor or pitted contactor is a straightforward swap, but we log the age of both since they usually degrade together on a unit that has been in service for 10-plus years.

FAQ
Heil in Los Altos questions, answered.
-
Do you actually come out to Los Altos, or is that too far from San Ramon?
We run calls across the Mid-Peninsula and Santa Clara Valley regularly. Los Altos is a standard service area for us, not a special trip. San Ramon is our base, but the drive out 580 and down 101 is routine. No trip fee added to the $75 diagnostic. -
Is Heil equipment a reasonable fit for a Los Altos home, or should I be looking at something else?
It depends on the install. The ICP platform that Heil runs on is well-supported, and parts availability is not an issue because it shares components with Carrier and Bryant. For a straight replacement of a ducted system in one of the older ranch-style homes on the valley floor, a Heil QuietComfort or Ion install is a practical choice. If you are on a tight lot with limited outdoor space or are trying to add zoned cooling to a room addition without extending ducts, a ductless split is usually a cleaner solution regardless of brand. We look at the house first and tell you what actually fits. -
What does the $75 diagnostic fee cover, and what kind of warranty do I get on the repair?
The $75 covers the full diagnosis: we pull fault codes, run component tests, and give you a written quote with a specific cause and specific fix before you decide anything. If you approve the repair that day, the $75 comes off the bill entirely. Parts and labor on the repair carry a 1-year warranty. If you are replacing a system rather than repairing one, installations come with 10-year parts and 10-year labor coverage.
