Cove in Richmond

Cove in Richmond kitchens.

The restored Victorians in Point Richmond and the newer townhomes at Marina Bay both have their share of remodeled kitchens. A remodel may route the dishwasher drain through an air gap, the small chrome cap beside the faucet. When that cap or the hose below it clogs, the Cove still pumps, but the water spits out onto the counter instead of going down the drain. It looks alarming, but it is usually a cleaning job.

Through the Annex, the Iron Triangle and out toward Hilltop, the houses are older bungalows and mid-century stock. A Cove in one of those kitchens drains through the same line as the sink, and that line has been in the wall far longer than the dishwasher. Our technician checks that drain path and the supply stop before naming a part. The $99 diagnostic is credited toward any repair you approve, and nothing starts without a written quote. Common repairs we handle.

  • Water spitting from the air gap beside the faucet. We lift the chrome cover, clear the chamber and run water through both hoses. If the hose to the disposer is packed with food, we clear that too, since a blocked outlet is what sends the water up. Then we run a drain and watch the cap stay dry.
  • Sour smell from water sliding back down the hose. Without a proper high loop or an air gap, sink water can drain back into the Cove and sit in the sump between cycles. We check how the hose is routed, set the loop under the counter, and clean the filter and sump so the smell does not return.
  • Rust spots from chipped rack tines. When the coating on a rack tine chips, the wire underneath rusts and leaves orange marks on plates and the tub. A few chips can be capped with a tine repair kit, but a rack with many broken tines is better replaced whole.

FAQ

Cove in Richmond questions, answered.

  • There is a little chrome cap next to our faucet in Marina Bay, and it overflows when the Cove drains. What is it?
That is the air gap. It keeps sink water from flowing back into the dishwasher. When it overflows, the hose from the gap to the disposer or drain is usually blocked. We clear it and check that the Cove pumps down fully afterward.
  • Can we run the Cove and the disposer at the same time in our Annex bungalow?
Yes. But when the disposer clogs, the Cove's drain water backs up with it. If water shows up in the tub after the sink clogs, clear the sink first. If it keeps happening, we check the connection and the disposer inlet.
  • What should we do with a Cove full of dirty water that will not drain?
Take the dishes out, bail the water with a cup and a towel, and pull the filter to look for debris. Do not pour drain cleaner into the tub, since it can damage seals and is unsafe for whoever opens the pump. If the water still sits, leave it for our technician.
