El Cerrito's housing stock is mostly 1940s through 1960s, ranches and split-levels climbing the hills off Moeser Lane and Barrett Avenue, stucco bungalows down in the flats near San Pablo Avenue. Most of it was built with real ductwork, so a lot of our Carrier work here is repair on an existing central system rather than a full retrofit, which is a different job than what we see in Berkeley's older Craftsman stock next door.
The climate stays marine-layer cool most of the year, so heating carries more of the load than cooling, but that's not uniform across the city. Mini-split retrofits are growing here too, mostly in additions or converted rooms the original ductwork never reached.

On older El Cerrito systems from the 1960s and 1970s I check the low-voltage wiring and connections before assuming a control board has failed, since decades of thermal cycling loosens connections long before it kills a board.

- Furnace heat exchanger and ignition on original 1960s systems. Some of El Cerrito's Carrier furnaces are original to the house and now on a second or third igniter. We test the ignition sequence and the flame sensor, and given the age we inspect the heat exchanger for cracks. If it's compromised we say so plainly and price the replacement path.
- Capacitor and contactor failure on hillside condensers. Carrier condensers on the hill lots above Moeser Lane lose a run capacitor or contactor after enough seasons of real sun exposure, and the AC won't start on the days it's actually needed. We confirm the readings on the meter and usually replace on the same visit.
- Mini-split sensor and drain faults in room additions. Where a Carrier ductless head covers an addition or converted garage the original ducts never reached, a drifting coil thermistor or a clogged condensate line will shut the head down to protect itself. We test the sensors and clear the drain, usually an inexpensive fix once we've read the code.
