Troubleshooting

Range Hood Not Venting: Blower Motor, Grease Filter, or Ductwork?

Smoke staying in your kitchen after cooking? Here's how to diagnose a range hood that's not venting, starting with the most likely cause and working down the list.

Range hood stopped pulling smoke out of the kitchen? Most of the time it’s a clogged grease filter, not a failed motor. Work through these checks first.

Start with the Grease Filter

Pull the filter out. If it’s dark, tacky, or dripping, that’s your problem. A saturated filter restricts airflow so badly the fan sounds like it’s running but accomplishes nothing.

Most metal mesh filters clean up fine: soak in hot water and dish soap for 20 minutes, scrub, reinstall. The dishwasher on its hottest cycle works too. Charcoal filters (common on ductless recirculating hoods) can’t be cleaned, only replaced. Check yours every one to three months if you cook with oil regularly.

After cleaning, run the hood again. If smoke clears and steam gets pulled up, you’re done. If not, keep reading.

The Blower Motor

The motor and fan wheel are the next suspects. A squirrel cage or blade assembly caked in grease can sound fine while moving almost no air. If you can see the fan wheel through the filter opening, a thick coating of buildup is a clue. Cleaning the wheel itself requires disassembly and electrical lockout, which is where homeowner checks end.

Beyond buildup, motors fail two ways. A hum with nothing spinning usually means a bad capacitor or a seized wheel. Complete silence after the switch flips points to an electrical problem: a tripped breaker, a failed speed switch, or a burned winding. Figuring out which one requires a multimeter and knowing what to do with the readings. Reconnecting live wiring after a wrong diagnosis is a real hazard. At that point, call a tech.

Ductwork and the Exterior Damper

If the filter is clean and the motor runs, the problem is downstream.

Every exterior duct termination has a backdraft damper, a small flap that closes when the hood is off to block cold air and pests. These get stuck from grease or corrosion. The cap is usually reachable from outside. If the flap won’t move by hand, try working it loose and hitting the hinge with a degreaser. If it’s corroded through, the wall cap is an inexpensive hardware store part.

Grease buildup inside the duct run is a different story. It accumulates slowly over years and is flammable. Duct cleaning means pulling sections apart and doing it correctly. If you suspect heavy buildup, have it done professionally.

Bird nests in the termination cap happen more than people expect, especially when the screen is damaged. Worth a look from outside if everything else checked out.

When to Call Us

Cleaning the filter and checking the exterior damper are the two things worth doing yourself. Everything past that, motor diagnosis, fan wheel cleaning, capacitor replacement, duct cleaning, involves disassembly or live electrical work. Done wrong, it either doesn’t fix the problem or creates a new one.

A tech can run through motor draw, speed switch function, and the full duct in under an hour. We source the right part for your specific hood model, which is usually the slowest part of a motor swap.

If you’re in the Tri-Valley or East Bay, call us or book at adriumservice.com. We’ll get you on the schedule fast, often same or next day when we can.

FAQ

Common questions.

How often should I clean my range hood grease filter?
Every one to three months if you cook with oil regularly. If you mostly boil water or reheat food, you can stretch it, but a quick visual check monthly is worth the habit.
Can I replace a range hood blower motor myself?
Motor replacement involves disconnecting live wiring, sourcing the exact part for your specific hood model, and reassembling correctly. Diagnosing it wrong before ordering means you've bought the wrong part. A loose connection at the end is a fire risk. Have a tech confirm it's actually the motor, then let them handle the swap.
Why does my range hood sound like it's running but still doesn't vent?
Usually a saturated grease filter or a stuck exterior damper. Both restrict airflow so completely that the fan spins but moves almost no air. Clean the filter first, then check the wall or roof cap. If neither fixes it, the motor or duct needs a closer look from a tech.
Is grease buildup inside the duct dangerous?
Yes. Accumulated grease in the duct is flammable and has caused house fires. If you see heavy buildup when you pull the duct at the hood end, have it professionally cleaned.
