Bosch Dishwasher Won't Start: The Likely Causes and Safe Checks

A Bosch that won't start is usually still healthy. Most of the time it's the door not latched, the child lock on, a delay start set, or no power reaching it. Here are the safe checks to run before you call anyone.

If your Bosch dishwasher won’t start, the machine is usually fine. Most of the time it’s the door that didn’t latch all the way, the child lock being on, a delay start counting down in the background, or power not reaching the unit. All of those you can check yourself in a few minutes, and none of them mean a repair. Here’s where to look, in the order I’d look.

Make sure the door is fully latched

Bosch dishwashers won’t run until the door is closed and latched. There’s a safety switch behind the latch, and if the door isn’t seated all the way, that switch never tells the machine it’s safe to fill with water. So the panel can light up, you can press start, and nothing happens.

Give the door a firm push until you feel it catch. Check that nothing’s in the way, a tall pot handle sticking up, a rack pushed out of position, or the bottom of the door gasket folded over. A door that feels closed but isn’t quite latched is the single most common reason a Bosch sits there doing nothing.

Check the child lock and that a cycle is selected

Two control-panel things trip people up here.

First, the child lock. If it’s on, the panel ignores the start button completely, which looks exactly like a dead dishwasher. Look for a lock symbol on the display or above one of the buttons. On most Bosch models you turn it off by pressing and holding that button for a few seconds until you hear a beep or the symbol clears. The exact button varies by model, so match the symbol to your manual if you’re not sure.

Second, you have to actually pick a cycle. If no wash program is selected, pressing start does nothing. Select your cycle first, then start.

Look for a delay start

Bosch units have a delay start option, and it’s easy to set by accident or forget you set it on purpose. If a delay is running, the dishwasher is working exactly as told, it’s just waiting. The display usually shows a countdown or a delay indicator. Cancel the delay, or hold the start button to reset the program, and start fresh.

Check the power: breaker, outlet, and a reset

If the panel is completely dark, the machine isn’t getting power. Go to your electrical panel and look for a tripped breaker. A breaker that’s tripped sits between on and off, and you reset it by pushing it fully off, then back on. If the dishwasher plugs into an outlet under the sink rather than being hardwired, make sure the plug is seated, and test that outlet with something else like a phone charger to confirm it’s live.

There’s also a simple reset that fixes a lot of no-starts. Unplug the dishwasher, or switch its breaker off, and leave the power off for several minutes. That clears the control board’s memory without changing your settings. Restore power and try again. A board that got confused after a power blip is a real and common cause, and this is the safe way to clear it.

Make sure the water is on

A Bosch needs water to start its cycle. If someone shut the dishwasher’s supply valve, usually under the sink, or the supply line got pinched when something was moved under there, the machine may refuse to run or stop early. Confirm the valve is fully open and the line behind it isn’t kinked. This is a look-and-turn check, nothing more.

Where the safe checks end

If the door’s latched, the child lock’s off, a cycle is selected, there’s no delay running, power and water are both confirmed, and it still won’t start, the trail leads to parts that need testing. I’d stop here.

The usual culprits at this stage are the door latch switch itself, which can wear out and stop signaling the board even though the door latches fine, a blown thermal fuse, or the control board. Checking any of those means opening the unit and working near the wiring, so that’s not a homeowner job. None of it is dangerous to leave alone while you book a visit. It just needs the right hands and a meter.

When to call us

Call when the safe checks didn’t do it, when the panel stays dark after a reset, when it lights up but won’t respond, or when you suspect the latch switch, fuse, or board. We service Bosch dishwashers across the Bay Area and we’ll usually have you booked same or next-day. Reach us at adriumservice.com and tell us what you’ve already tried, it saves time on the visit.

FAQ

Common questions.

Why won't my Bosch dishwasher start at all?
Usually the door isn't latched all the way, the child lock is on, a delay start is counting down, or it lost power at the breaker or outlet. Bosch won't run until the door is fully closed and a cycle is selected. Run those safe checks first. If it still won't start, the door latch switch, thermal fuse, or control board may be the issue, and those need a tech.
How do I turn off the child lock on a Bosch dishwasher?
On most Bosch models you press and hold the lock button for a few seconds until you hear a beep or the lock symbol disappears. The exact button varies by model, so check the symbol on your panel against your manual. With the lock on, the panel ignores the start button, which looks exactly like the dishwasher is dead when it isn't.
Does resetting a Bosch dishwasher fix a no-start?
Often, yes. Unplug it, or switch off its breaker, and leave the power off for several minutes, then restore it. That clears the control board's memory without wiping your settings, and a confused board is a common reason a Bosch won't respond. If it starts after that, you're done. If not, it needs a closer look.
Is a Bosch dishwasher that won't start dangerous to leave?
No. It's safe to leave it sitting while you sort it out. What you should not do is start opening the unit to test the door switch, fuse, or wiring yourself. Those checks mean working near the electrical side, so that part is a pro job.
